College of Health Student Developed Flu Forecasts Through Research

Monelli Esfandiary, College of Health senior, has worked with assistant professor Tom McAndrew to conduct flu-related research, including the development of flu forecasts and predicting flu season.

Throughout her four years as a Population Health major, Monelli Esfandiary has become an integral part of the community within the College of Health. She worked alongside Tom McAndrew, assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science, to develop weekly flu forecasts. She was the only undergraduate student to present her findings at a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) research conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Now, her research with McAndrew is based on predicting the flu season before it happens.
